Μαγίστερ, διδάσκαλε, ἐπιστάτα, λέγεται δὲ καὶ ὁδηγός.
Magister: teacher, overseer, one-who-stands-over; he is also called a guide.
Μάγος, παρὰ τὸ μάστω τὸ μαλάσσω, ὁ διὰὲ τῶν μαγι κῶν ἐμπλάστρων τὰ μέλλοντα προλέγων.
Magos: from mástō, “to knead / soften / work with the hands”;
one who foretells what is coming through magical poultices (emplastra).
(Note: ἐμπλάστρων = applied medicinal plasters, not “spells” in the abstract.)
